Per Collider, Jeanne du Barry will premiere in 500 U.S. cinemas on May 2, following an arrangement between Fathom Events and Vertical. The film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last May, grossing just $13.8 million against its $22.4 million budget since its release in France. The movie, which marks the first starring role for Depp after his defamation trial, will also be making its premiere in the U.K. and Ireland on Apr. 19.
Jeanne du Barry sees Depp star as King Louis XV, marking the first time he has ever acted in French. Directed/written by and starring Maïwenn as Jeanne Vaubernier, the favorite mistress of King Louis XV, Jeanne du Barry chronicles their real-life romance during the 18th century. The film explores Vaubernier’s quest to move up the social ladder of the French aristocracy, using her femininity and appetite for knowledge to transform herself from a commoner to the King’s love interest. While Vaubernier gets what she wants in a male-dominated world, her relationship with King Louis XV attracts scandal. A statement by Vertical Partner, Peter Jarowey, said “‘Jeanne du Barry’ was a sensation at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, and we are thrilled to partner with Fathom Events for the nationwide theatrical release of Maïwenn’s stunning piece of cinematic art showcasing Johnny Depp’s return to the big screen.”
Jeanne du Barry Garnered Praise for Johnny Depp’s Acting
Jeanne du Barry received encouraging feedback following its Cannes debut. However, subsequent critical reviews on Rotten Tomatoes have been less kind, with the film earning a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie’s screenplay received criticism, though Depp was praised for his performance. Jeanne du Barry‘s Cannes debut didn’t come without controversy, however, as fans of his ex-wife and fellow actor, Amber Heard, voiced their outrage over the screening of his film. Depp and Heard were the subjects of a much-publicized defamation trial in 2022 which saw Heard ordered to pay a significant sum and negative effects on her on-screen career as a result.
Known for his run as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Depp is being eyed by Disney for another sequel in the film series. The actor revealed he was fired by the company following Heard’s allegations against him, which led to the defamation trial which he later won. Though Disney wants Depp back for Pirates of the Caribbean 6, they reportedly will only consider him for a supporting role and plan to recast Sparrow.
Depp recently returned to the director’s chair for the upcoming Italian biographical drama film, Modì, which tells the life story of famed artist, Amedeo Modigliani. Depp co-produced the film with Al Pacino, who he credits for getting him back into directing.
Jeanne du Barry opens in domestic theaters on May 2.
