Eilish has long teased the arrival of her third studio album (the title of which is yet to be revealed), saying last December that it was “almost done” after revealing in mid-2022 that she’d started working on it with her brother Finneas.

Last August, too, Eilish appeared on Dua Lipa’s podcast At Your Service to speak about the creative process for her new album. She explained: “Everything is different about it. Ive been trying to compare recently, just because I’m getting used to doing it in a different way. And trying to be like, ‘It’s okay to do that. I’m okay. I’m still able to do that; I’m capable still.’

“[Finneas and I] were like, ‘We’ve got it all figured out, this is how we’re going to do it from now on, and it works really well. And, you know, touring for a year-and-a-half, then coming back to it, and being way older – and not even much older, but again, the jump between 18 and 21 is a big jump. Just mentally and physically, and realistically. It’s just been completely different.”

The album will follow up on Eilish’s smash-hit 2021 effort Happier Than Ever, as well as last year’s standalone single What Was I Made For? The song, written for and released on the Barbie soundtrack, became her biggest release on the ARIA Singles Chart and earned her a slew of accolades – including the Chairman’s Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, which she dedicated to “anyone who experiences hopelessness and the feeling of existential dread”.

Reviewing the Sydney (Eora) stop on her 2022 Australian tour, Alasdair Belling wrote for TheMusic.com.au: “Eilish’s legions [of fans] were treated to a show as good as any ever seen in the Harbour City. For one night, Sydney became the epi-centre of music’s brave new world. That world, for the first time in a long time, now resembles an age most wish they could have been around to see. Thank god artists like Billie Eilish can still inspire the same sense of wonder and excitement in live music older generations so fondly speak of.”
