‘Unicorn dog’ who endured a difficult life and was scheduled to be euthanized is adopted by a loving family and becomes the sweetest dog ever
Strawberry, a 2-year-old pit bull with the nickname “unicorn dog,” finally found a loving home in South Pasadena after being transferred from one shelter to another and nearly being euthanized, in part due to a lump in her head.
The dog seemed to have fallen on hard times when he was rescued by the La Belle Foundation in Los Angeles.
“This young dog has been through the wringer and back,” the rescue organization said in a social media post. “She has horrible scratches on her swollen face and gooey eyes, not to mention two giant bumps on her sweet head.”
The shelters had previously thought the lump on her head was a tᴜmoг and wanted to euthanize her. But tests showed that it was scar tissue from an old injury and was not life-threatening.
When Strawberry made a full recovery and was ready to be adopted, the Kuhlman family in South Pasadena saw her online and “couldn’t resist.”
“Something spoke to me about her,” said Kristen Kuhlman, the family matriarch. “She couldn’t find a home for quite some time. We wait and think about it. And we continue to see it on the website.”
The family, having just recovered from the pain of losing a 15-year-old dog, decided to take Strawberry home and shower her with love and affection.
“She’s a good snuggler,” Claire Kuhlman, Kristen’s twin daughter, said while laughing. “She will lie down on top of you. She is burly and big.”
It’s inconceivable that the sweet, charming dog was nearly euthanized, the Kuhlmans said.
“We really wondered how the lump got there,” said Jack Kuhlman, the family’s twin son. “I think that’s another reason why it took so long for her to be adopted.”
The puppy came with the nickname “Strawberry,” and the family decided to keep it because they thought it “fit.”
“It’s nice. It has a lot of syllables, so sometimes we call it ‘Strawbs,’” explained Jeff Kuhlman, the patriarch. “We found a strap that had strawberries on it. It seemed like everything fell into place.”
The children said the first thing they do when they get home from school is play fetch with Strawberry and snuggle with their new dog.
Strawberry the unicorn dog also has some fans in the neighborhood, as the pup is quite recognizable with her unique bump on her head, according to the family.
“People would roll down their windows and say, ‘Hey, strawberry,’” Kristen Kuhlman explained. “She is very loved by many people.”
